Oppression in the Bible

What is oppression?

Law:
Abusing immigrants, slaves, poor (Exodus 22)
Creditor harming debtor due to debt owed—Exodus 22
Judge determining against the poor due to a bribe
Judgment against one for the sin of another, e.g. a son cannot be punished for the action of his father Deut 24
Neglecting the needs of the poor—widows, orphans, immigrants, slaves (Deut 15)
Refusing to lend to a brother in need (Deut 15)
Neglecting to pay temporary labor at the end of the day (Deut 24)

Prophets:
Refusing to defend the needy-- Isa 1:17, 23; Jeremiah 5:28
Stealing from the poor-- Isaiah 3:14-15
Unjust judgments against the poor-- Isa 10:1-2
Not assisting the needy-- Eze 16:49
Taking interest for loans-- Ezekiel 18:15-17
Enslaving a people-- Amos 1:6
Excessive violence in war, especially against innocents-- Amos 1:13
Excessive rent against the poor-- Amos 5:11
Accepting bribes-- Amos 5:12
Turning away those who need shelter for a night-- Amos 5:12

Wisdom:
Siezing someone else's house for debt-- Job 20:19
Pushing the needy aside from the road-- Job 24:4
Enslaving the fatherless-- Job 24:9
Taking clothing and food from the needy-- Job 24:10
Killing the poor-- Job 24:14
Keeping provision from the poor-- Job 31:16-22
Causing the poor to cry to God-- Job 34:28 (Exodus 22)
Refusing to hear the cry of the poor—Prov 21:13
Taking from the needy—Prov. 22:22-23
Taking a bribe—Ecc. 7:7

NT:
Dishonoring the poor—James 2; Luke 14
Not forgiving debts that cannot be paid—Matt 18
Not forgiving sins when one repents—Luke 17
Neglecting the needs of the poor—Luke 16
Retaining wealth when others were in need—James 5; Luke 16; Luke 12
Holding wealth for one’s own potential future need, when others have need now—Luke 12
Keeping extra wealth for yourself when you could give the excess to others—I John 3; Luke
